Understanding Silicone Implants
Silicone breast implants are made of a silicone rubber (Silastic) shell with a cohesive silicone gel filling. They are often chosen over saline implants because they feel more natural. The silicone gel filling is thicker than saline solution, and there is less tendency for visible rippling. Silicone gel implants tend to last longer than saline devices, and are lighter as well. For these reasons silicone implants are a very popular choice for breast enhancement surgeries. Silicone gel implants are available with both smooth and textured surfaces. There is some evidence that textured implants can reduce the risk of capsular contracture. Cohesive silicone gel implants can last for fifteen to twenty years. Under Canadian regulations, patients who are at least 22 years of age can choose silicone for their breast augmentation surgery.
What Makes Gummy Bear Implants Different?
Gummy bear implants are also made of silicone gel. The gel, however, is highly cohesive or nearly solid, in comparison to conventional silicone gel implants which have a more fluid, gel-like filling. Because they are virtually solid, gummy bear implants can hold a tear-drop shape; they may also be round. They have a reasonably natural feel and, like their namesakes, hold their shape even when their outer shell is damaged. Gummy bear implants may be less prone to leaks and, when rupture occurs, they do not deflate. These implants are also less likely to cause rippling than saline implants and are often used for enhancements where the implant is placed in front of the muscle. They do, however, produce more rippling than conventional silicone gel devices.
