Eye Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid Surgery Vancouver, BC | Blepharoplasty

The eyes and eyelids both play an essential role in overall facial aesthetics. As collagen and elastin decline with age, the delicate skin surrounding the eyes develops wrinkles and starts to sag. These changes can lead to an aged or tired appearance. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) corrects these issues and beautifully restores a youthful, vibrant look to your eyelids.

Eyelid surgery can treat excess upper eyelid skin as well as lower eye bags. Dr. Eric Pugash offers effective techniques that lead to long-lasting, natural-looking results. Learn more about how this procedure can allow you to look as energized as you feel.

How Blepharoplasty is Performed

Dr. Pugash uses several different surgical techniques to produce customized results for patients. The right procedure for you depends on your cosmetic concerns and ultimate goals. Surgery of the eyelids can produce very pleasing facial rejuvenation, leaving little or no evidence that any operation has been carried out. The goal is a natural, more youthful-looking eyelid. You and Dr. Pugash will decide on the technique that is best for you during your initial consultation.

Options For Eyelid Surgery/Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery can address the upper and lower eyelids:

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery addresses drooping, loose skin that hangs over the eyes and fatty deposits that create a bulky lid appearance. This procedure requires an incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. A crescent of excess skin is then removed, and underlying fat is reduced. The skin is carefully stitched so that only a minimal scar is created at the natural eyelid crease.

The result of upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a defined eyelid contour with a smooth, youthful appearance to the skin. This procedure is also an excellent option for creating a double fold for Asian patients. It is also chosen by patients who have naturally hooded eyelids, rather than age-related changes.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery treats fatty deposits under the eyes (“eyebags”) and drooping lower eyelid skin. The incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid or just below, at the lower lash line, depending on the patient’s cosmetic goals. Through these incisions, excess fat is removed, and sagging skin is trimmed. The results of lower eyelid surgery provide a naturally refreshed and well-rested appearance.

Is Blepharoplasty Surgery Right for You?

Some patients pursue this surgery to correct age-related cosmetic changes, while others have inherited traits that cause them to seek treatment in their 20s or 30s. In either case, eyelid surgery is an excellent option for rejuvenating the eye area and creating a defined eyelid contour.

Ideal candidates for this procedure include healthy men and women who exhibit:

  • Drooping upper eyelids
  • Naturally bulky lid appearance or hooded eyelids
  • Excess fat deposits under the eyes or “eye bags”
  • Hollowed appearance where the lower eyelid meets the cheek

For optimal rejuvenation, eyelid surgery can be carried out in combination with other procedures such as brow lift and facelift surgery. A brow lift may be recommended if the upper eyelid condition is accompanied by sagging of the eyebrows. Hollowing around the bony orbit below the eye can be addressed with fat grafting. During your initial consultation, Dr. Pugash will create a personalized treatment plan to achieve your desired results.

FAQs About Blepharoplasty in Vancouver

Dr. Pugash provides complete care following your eyelid surgery, so you remain comfortable, return quickly to all your usual activities, and obtain the best possible results. During the recovery period, he will ask you to return several times to his office for follow-up visits. At that time, Dr. Pugash will assess your healing progress and answer any questions you might have. Also, he may also evaluate your candidacy for future treatments, such as short scar facelift. Patients are usually presentable within two to two-and-a-half weeks after blepharoplasty.

Potential complications of eyelid surgery include reactions to the anesthetic, infection, bleeding, scarring, injury to the eye or the muscles of the eye and eyelid, pulling down of the lower lid, unevenness, or other unsatisfactory aesthetic results. Temporary dryness or tearing may occur after surgery. These risks are rare when a fully certified plastic surgeon performs your procedure.

In most cases, no. The incisions used for blepharoplasty are concealed within the natural crease of the eyelid, or they are hidden within the inside of the lower lid or along, the lower lash line. These incisions typically heal nicely over time, and the resultant scars will be virtually undetectable.

Patients can wear eyeglasses immediately after surgery. It’s recommended that patients wait at least two weeks before inserting contact lenses because this can disrupt the incisions. Dr. Pugash will provide you with detailed aftercare information and will let you know when you can resume wearing contacts.

Most of the swelling and bruising will be gone after two weeks. While the eyelids appear very much improved at this point, the final results will not be apparent for six to twelve months.

Dr. Pugash takes great pride in helping all his patients achieve their aesthetic goals. He offers a full range of sophisticated treatments including facelift and facial implants. He also performs otoplasty for Vancouver patients wishing to make a more proportionate ear appearance. In addition to performing advanced facial cosmetic procedures, Dr. Pugash is a highly skilled breast augmentation surgeon.

Dr. Pugash will do everything to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. An anesthesiologist will administer sedation so you are relaxed, and Dr. Pugash will place local anesthetic under the skin, so you feel nothing. Also, Dr. Pugash will give you a prescription for analgesic medication to ensure a comfortable healing process.

Most blepharoplasty patients report long-lasting satisfaction and an improved facial appearance. However, eyelid surgery does not stop the natural aging process. Depending on factors such as your genetic makeup and lifestyle, you may notice natural aging effects appearing five to seven years after surgery. At that point, you may opt to have a follow-up surgery or employ non-surgical solutions like dermal fillers or Botox.

The cost depends on whether two lids or four are done, as well as any other procedures you choose to have done concurrently. Dr. Pugash will provide you with a detailed cost analysis during your consultation.
