Neuromodulators

These cosmetic injectables have been on the market since the early 2000s. Dr. Pugash offers three different but similar treatments designed to smooth your skin and eliminate lines and creases. The most common treatment sites are the forehead, brow, and around the eyes.

BOTOX®

This purified protein restricts muscle movement during facial expressions. This process prevents lines and creases from being etched in the forehead, brow, and around the eyes.

This treatment is the most popular cosmetic procedure worldwide, with millions of injections administered with safe and effective results. Treatment can take as little as 15-minutes and last four to six months.

Dysport®

Dysport®, like BOTOX®, temporarily paralyzes facial muscles to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Although Dysport® is similar to BOTOX®, there are a few differences between these products.

Primarily, many report Dysport® works more quickly and may last longer. Additionally, patients may respond more positively to Dysport®, even if BOTOX® proved beneficial.

Dysport® injections can be started at a younger age to prevent dynamic wrinkles from forming. Dr. Pugash will discuss all the possible options with you during your consultation to explain more about how Dysport® works and if it’s right for you.

Xeomin®

This neuromodulator was designed to eliminate additives and be less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Unlike BOTOX and Dysport, Xeomin needs no refrigeration and can be stored on shelves safely to reduce spoilage during transit and storage.

BOTOX Benefits

Most men and women use neuromodulators to target moderate to severe forehead lines, frown lines, smile lines, and crow’s feet. Laughing is good for the soul, but those years of belly laughs can take their toll on our faces. Simply by smoothing specific facial lines, we can minimize their effect.

BOTOX Candidates

Women and men of all ages have had neuromodulator injections for facial rejuvenation. It is an optimal treatment for many who would rather delay a browlift.

BOTOX Recovery

One aspect of these injectables is that recovery is quick. Many patients return to work immediately after the treatment. It’s why many schedule their injections during their lunch break.

Dermal Fillers

Unlike neuromodulators like BOTOX, dermal fillers offer facial rejuvenation lower on the face. They are designed to restore lost volume to address wrinkles, fine lines, and folds.

Restylane®
This hyaluronic acid get is an optimal lip enhancer and can resolve facial folds and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound found in the body that attracts moisture and underlying volume.

Perlane®

Another hyaluronic acid filler is a longer-lasting version of Restylane. Perlane can be used as a lip enhancer and can eliminate deep folds in the skin. Treatments are quick and convenient, often less than a half-hour, with results lasting six to nine months.

Emervel

This hyaluronic acid filler can be tailored to each patient’s specific needs, such as softening wrinkles and folds around the mouth and nose, restoring volume to the cheeks and lips, and contouring important facial features like the cheekbones and chin. The results last six months to a year, depending on treatment location and which product is being used.

Dermal Filler Benefits

Dermal fillers offer manifold benefits, and may be used to:

  • Add Volume. With aging comes a loss of natural fat and underlying tissue.
  • Plump lips. Fillers address thin lips and smokers’ lines
  • Complement BOTOX. Filler can be used concurrently with a neuromodulator to enhance results.
  • Reduce scarring
  • Boost collagen levels
  • Reduce the early signs of aging
  • Provide instant results

Dermal Filler Candidates

Those who wish to add underlying volume to support skin and reduce wrinkles, lines, and folds in the cheek area, around the nose, mouth, and chin.

Dermal Filler Recovery

Although there may be some bruising and swelling, it can quickly be resolved with simple cold compresses. Most patients return to their regular routine directly after treatment.

BOTOX and Dermal Filler FAQs

Although wrinkles can also be addressed with surgery, recovery is longer. Botox is quick—usually 20 to 30 minutes — and requires little if any anesthetic. Recovery time is nil, and results are evident within a week.  It is less costly than surgery. Discomfort is minimal and responds to an ice pack.

Anyone over 18 can have these injections, but most patients are between 30 and 60.

Botox may be used as a preventive measure to delay lines from forming. However,  Dr. Pugash tends to discourage preventive use because results are hard to predict.

In Vancouver, Botox® injection costs depend on the injector administering the dosage, the treatment area, and the number of units required to achieve your aesthetic goals. A typical Botox® session in Vancouver may cost between $300 to $1200, depending on the areas you want to treat.

The FDA has approved Botox® and dermal fillers for women and men over eighteen years of age. However, most patients typically begin receiving Botox® treatments in their late thirties to early forties to prevent wrinkles.

It’s not a question of which one is better, but rather what cosmetic concerns you want to address. For example, Botox® is for treating dynamic wrinkles (resulting from repetitive muscle movements), and dermal fillers add volume to resolve fine lines, static wrinkles, and sagging folds.

The injector will clean the skin and apply a topical anesthetic, or sometimes an ice pack. The dermal filler is positioned under the skin via injection. Although the process is not generally painful, some fillers do sting when injected. Many fillers contain local anesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable. The procedure is quick and can be performed in the office. No recovery time is necessary. Any burning or swelling abate soon after injections.

Yes. It’s also essential to understand results won’t be as dramatic as what you can expect from a facelift. But there will be a noticeable improvement that will enhance your appearance and your confidence.

Although all are neuromodulators, there are differences between these three injectables. Botox® has name recognition and is the most popular cosmetic treatment globally. However, Dysport® and Xeomin® may have subtle advantages to help patients achieve their aesthetic goals. Dr. Pugash will recommend the injectable that is optimal for your unique cosmetic concerns.

Nothing dramatic happens after you stop receiving Botox® treatments, except that the dynamic wrinkles return. After the neuromodulator is neutralized by your body, normal muscle contractions begin once again.
