Have Saline Implants Fallen Out of Style?

As women’s aesthetic tastes have evolved over the years, the preferred choice of breast implants has also shifted. Some of this has also been influenced by the availability of newer implant technologies and innovative approaches to cosmetic breast surgery. Learn more about what’s trending for breast implants and how women are achieving natural-looking results with today’s options.

Saline and Silicone: Exploring Implant Popularity Through the Years

Since their introduction to the market, both saline and silicone implants have remained popular options for women undergoing breast augmentation. However, in the late 80s, there were growing concerns about the safety of silicone-filled implants. The FDA held a series of advisory panels in response to these concerns, and by 1992 they declared an official moratorium on silicone breast implants. In the meantime, saline implants were the only option, and their popularity flourished throughout the 90s and early 2000s.

After many years of clinical studies and additional advisory panels, silicone implants were reintroduced to the market in 2006 and the FDA confirmed the safety of this popular implant choice. Advancements in silicone breast implant technology continued to evolve. Many of today’s silicone implants use a highly cohesive silicone gel and are anatomically shaped to mimic the look and feel of natural breasts. These so-called “gummy bear implants” are some of the most popular options chosen by women today.

How Are Tastes Evolving Now?

The typical breast augmentation aesthetic of the 90s and early 2000s was characterized by round, high-profile saline implants. These days the trend is shifting toward a more natural-looking appearance. Gummy bear silicone implants are a popular choice for enhancing both the shape and volume of the breasts without looking “overdone.”

Fat transfer is also a popular choice, especially for women who do not want synthetic implants and are seeking a moderate increase in breast size. This innovative procedure involves removing fat from the patient’s body, processing it, and then carefully injecting it into the breast tissue to provide natural-looking volume.

Another reason women are opting for smaller, natural-looking silicone implants is changing lifestyles. Many women these days make fitness a priority and find that larger implants are uncomfortable during exercise. Smaller implants allow women to look and feel their best without disrupting their active lifestyles.

While the overall trend has shifted toward a natural look with silicone implants, saline implants are still occasionally chosen by patients. Saline implants do offer some unique advantages. Because they are filled after insertion, shorter incisions can be used. In the event of a rupture, the saline solution can be safely absorbed into the body.

It’s important to discuss your preferences with your surgeon. Both saline and silicone implants are safe, effective options for enhancing the breasts, whether you’re seeking a natural or bold look.
