Eyelid Surgery vs. Brow Lift: What You Need to Know

In having many discussions with our patients, we’ve learned that many of them misunderstand the distinction between brow lifts and eyelid surgery. Although both are excellent options that aim to improve one’s facial appearance, patients often don’t know what each operation does and how they differ. In this post, we would like to clear up any confusion that you may have.

Brow Lift and Eyelid Surgery Defined

When we talk brow lift, the best way to explain it is to think of a facelift for the upper face. It is a surgical procedure that raises your brow and forehead skin, tightening wrinkles and fine lines. It can also improve facial expressions and a variety of other problems.

On the other hand, eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, deals specifically with the eyelids. It eliminates lines and wrinkles on this delicate area by removing excess skin from the upper lids to make the eyes look brighter, youthful, and more alert.

Both are optimal procedures that pursue a similar result. Brow lifts and eyelid surgery each aim to eliminate lax skin from the upper face, which may cause varying levels of discomfort. However, the surgical processes for each are much different; brow lifts are performed by making an incision up around your hairline, whereas eyelid lifts are performed just above your eyelids.

Which One Do You Need?

Over time, your eyelid skin will gradually descend as you age. If your eyelid skin is starting to hang over your eyes and impair your vision, you are likely a good candidate for an eyelid lift. Eyelifts also improve wrinkles, lines, and other imperfections in this small area. If your forehead and brow line skin have not yet begun to sag, but your eyelids have started to droop, eyelid surgery alone can resolve this issue.

Conversely, if the skin on your forehead and brows have begun to sag significantly, you may want to consider having a brow lift, which will tighten your facial skin from your brow line all the way to the very top of your face. Choosing a brow lift, however, will also not necessarily address loose skin on your eyelids.

Many patients choose to pair a brow lift with an eyelid lift, which is frequently the best option. Combining the two procedures allows Dr. Pugash to return both the eyelids and brows to their natural positions. The results of any of these options often yield smooth skin, a youthful countenance, and a fantastic confidence boost.
