The eyes are one of the first areas of the face to reveal signs of aging. In addition to the appearance of crow’s feet (the crinkles at the corner of the eyes) the lids begin to droop and bags form under the eyes. Crepey skin may appear on the upper lid. Fortunately, surgical correction of the aging eyelid can effectively restore a youthful appearance.
Aesthetic eye lift surgery (blepharoplasty) addresses the upper eye, the lower eye, or both. Your plastic surgeon will carefully examine your eyes and help you decide which of the following surgical options are right for you.
Cosmetic surgery of the upper eyelid removes a crescent of skin as well as small amounts of fat and muscle to rejuvenate the face. The fine scar is well hidden in the upper lid crease.
Eyelid surgery is followed by a variable degree of swelling and bruising. Most patients can make themselves presentable within 2 weeks.
Patients of Asian descent should be aware that due to structural difference an eyelift may result in a more westernized appearance.
Cosmetic surgery of the lower eyelid aims to correct lower lid pouches. As we age, the ligaments beneath the eye that control the fatty tissue begin to loosen, allowing the fat to bulge forward.
Fat may be reduced through an incision inside the lid (known as a transconjunctival approach) or an incision just below the lashes. Skin may or may not be removed, depending on the degree of excess.
It is important that the surgeon be very careful how much skin is removed, so that the lid is not pulled down after surgery. This complication, known as ectropion, can be difficult to correct. A “skin pinch” trims only small amounts of skin beneath the lashes.
Some patients demonstrate hollowed-out areas below the eye. These hollows can be filled out with fat for a fresher, rejuvenated appearance.
The skin incisions are closed with sutures. These are generally removed 5 days or so after surgery.
It is important to note that blepharoplasty surgery will not correct crow’s feet or dark circles under the eye.
Following surgery there is some bruising and swelling. Applying ice packs regularly can relieve discomfort and reduce puffiness. There may be temporary numbness of the eyelid skin.
A successful outcome promotes a brighter, restored and rested appearance. The results of eyelift surgery can last for 10 years or longer.
Restoring the beauty and symmetry of the eyes and face requires the artistic skill of an experienced plastic surgeon.
