Increasing numbers of women in their 40’s are choosing to have breast augmentation. With their childbearing years behind them, they are starting to consider their options to reverse the effects of aging.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeon reports that in 2016, 85,000 women aged 40-54 elected to undergo breast augmentation, while 39,000 opted for a breast lift. Fullness and projection can be restored with breast augmentation while a breast lift can correct droopiness.
If you are in your 40’s and thinking about starting or adding to your family, breast implants will not interfere with pregnancy or breast feeding.
What can Aesthetic Breast Surgery do for you in your 40’s?
Breast augmentation, with a lift if necessary, can rejuvenate the breast, allowing it to retain a youthful profile even as the body continues to age. Breast augmentation fills out the breast while a lift (mastopexy) raises the nipples and removes excess skin. Many women who opt for breast surgery in their 40’s find they are happier with their appearance and are more confident and comfortable in their clothing.
Important Considerations
It is imperative to stop smoking at least three months before a breast lift. Smoking creates wrinkles, ages the skin and decreases its elasticity. Collagen and elastin are lost at a higher rate than in those who are smoke-free. Smoking can cause breathing and healing problems and will put you at greater risk than those who are smoke-free.
Remember to discuss all your medical considerations, medical history and health concerns with your plastic surgeon. As with any surgery, there are potential risks; you may be asked to receive clearance from your primary care doctor. Prior to your surgery you will receive pre-op instructions which will assist you in understanding what you can do to help contribute to a successful procedure.
Mammogram and Breast Implants
Your surgeon may recommend a mammogram to establish a baseline to which later mammograms can be compared after surgery. Following breast augmentation, make sure to inform the mammogram technician that you have implants as extra mammogram views are required to visualize all the breast tissue.
Silicone or Saline Implants?
All implants have silicone rubber shells. They may be filled with saline (salt water) or silicone gel. Silicone gel implants are softer, lighter, last longer and have a more natural feel than saline implants. Saline implants are an alternative for those women who prefer a ‘natural’ product in their body, or who are not yet 22 years old.
The so-called gummy bear implants are filled with a silicone gel that is closer to a solid than a liquid.
The Best Size for You
There are several considerations when choosing the size of your breast implants. You and your surgeon will determine the implant size that will best suit your build and satisfy your goals, while still allowing for a smooth recovery and long-term success.
Incisions
Three incisions are commonly used for breast augmentation. During your consultation, your surgeon will include a discussion of which surgical approach is right for you.
Armpit: The implant is inserted through an incision in the armpit. The surgeon uses an endoscope or camera to see into the surgical field.
Areola: The incision is made below the nipple along the edge of the areola.
Inframammary: The incision is made in or near the crease below the breast.
