Breast Augmentation Series: What You Need to Know About Breast Augmentation in Your 20s

Your 20s are a prime age for breast augmentation. This operation involves the placement of implants into the breast to enhance shape and fullness. It is one of the most popular aesthetic surgical procedures in Canada and the United States. The goal of this post is to advise young women in their 20s about breast augmentation.

Breast Implant Replacement in the Future

Saline and silicone gel breast implants will last for many years, but they are not lifetime devices. In general saline implants will last 10 to 15 years before draining out. Silicone gel implants will fail and need to be removed or replaced, generally 15 to 20 years after placement. Reasons for replacement include leakage due to implant failure, the wish to change the type of implant, or to adjust the size.

Limited Choices for Breast Implants

Health Canada has approved saline filled breast implants for women aged 18 and older, while silicone gel implants are approved for women aged 22 and older. Consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon will help you determine which type is best suited for you and whether waiting for silicone might be the best option.

You Can Probably Still Breastfeed

Is breastfeeding still possible with breast implants? In general the breasts will do what they were meant to do, with or without implants. Let us know if this is a priority so we can select the best incision for you.

Pregnancy Can Cause Breast Changes

Pregnancy after breast augmentation may well change your breasts. Though not always the case, some women will return after children to discuss a change of implants or a breast lift.

Medical History a Factor

If you are a smoker, it is always in your best interests to stop before surgery. Smoking can cause breathing complications and healing problems. Your consultation will include an assessment of your medical history, including any medications and supplements you may be taking.

Importance of Realistic Expectations

It is important to set realistic goals in preparing for breast augmentation surgery. Factors such as body type and anatomical limitations will determine what can and cannot be achieved with your procedure. Some patients assume that they can have the breasts of a celebrity or someone they know. It is important to understand that the breasts will look the same after surgery as before, just fuller.

For this reason I do all patient education and preparation myself – I do not delegate this important process.  I help the patient to arrive at an operative plan that will deliver optimal results. This takes time but pays dividends in a smooth recovery, a good outcome and a happy patient.
